MISSION STATEMENT

The Grant Township School District is dedicated to educating all students to their highest ability. In the 21st century, our one-room school holds a place of uniqueness.  Our students benefit from individualized instruction, which builds confidence to excel in their life choices, resulting with 95 percent of attending students going on to institutions of higher learning.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY
Grant Township School believes that each child who attends our school deserves individual respect while working together as a team with other students – a team that fosters appreciation for individual differences and a willingness to help fellow students when able.  We believe that a safe and stimulating environment offers each student optimum learning opportunities which we strive to provide.  We believe that parent/family and community are vital to student success;
therefore, we emphasize they share their knowledge, time, and talent with the students whenever possible.

School Motto

“To do your best, is the test!”

SCHOOL ACCREDITATION

EDUCATION YES! and “No Child Left Behind” is the current accreditation legislation.  All small schools under ten students receive a no-grade status.  Grant Township School met AYP, Adequate Yearly Progress, through the Michigan Department of Education.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT TESTS

Each year The Michigan Educational Assessment Program is administered to all public school students in grades three through eight.  Areas assessed are reading, writing, and math for all grade levels.  Science is assessed at the fifth grade level and social studies at the eighth grade. In April of 2008, the number of students enrolled within the tested grades was less than ten; therefore, statistical averages for each area cannot be published without compromising student confidentiality.  The California Achievement test will be administered to each student in the spring.

HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS & STAFF

Our teacher’s qualifications have been reviewed. She has met highly qualified status for the grades taught in our school.  The teacher regularly attends workshops and in-services to stay informed of the most current academic practices and information.  Part-time para-professional aides have met Michigan State Requirements for Employment.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Conferences are held in the fall and spring.  Telephone conferences are held with parents who cannot attend.  100% of families participated last year.  Individual meetings with parents are made throughout the year as needed.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

Grant Township School has organized a School Improvement Committee.

Self-assessment rubrics provided by the Office of School Improvement, and Michigan Department of Education Grade Level Content Expectations, will be used this year to evaluate, and update, our current curriculum.  Through this process strengths and weaknesses will be identified to implement strategies to improve student outcomes.  The committee meets on a quarterly basis.  A copy of the School Improvement Plan is on file in the school office for anyone interested.

PRESCHOOL CHILDREN WELCOME!

The Copper Harbor School has a new dimension – a Preschool!  Children who are three years of age may attend school two half-days per week.

Children four years or older may attend school three days per week.

The new Preschool requires a teacher to take Early Childhood Classes, and a state Early Childhood Test, to obtain a ZA Endorsement on their teaching certificate.  Our teacher has completed all the requirements for this endorsement.

SPECIALIZED SCHOOL SUPPORT

Students requiring the services of a speech, occupational, or physical therapist; school social worker/psychologist; or other support services, may receive these services from the Copper Country Intermediate School District.  Students are placed in the appropriate program, or service, through an individual planning and placement committee evaluation.  Each child’s Individual Education Plan includes performance indicators/evaluation criteria and is reviewed by school staff and parents regularly.  Marked gains occur when students receive early and continuous intervention services.

GRANT TOWNSHIP SCHOOL NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY

In compliance with Title VI of the Civil rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendment Act of 1972, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, it is the policy of the Grant Township School District that no person shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, marital status, or disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination during any program or activity or in employment.
